PEX Vs. Copper
What is PEX?
PEX tubing is a new, widely used alternative to copper pipe. ‘PEX’ is an abbreviation for cross-linked polyethylene. The ‘PE’ in PEX stands for Poly Ethylene and the ‘X’ stands for ‘Cross-linked’, a way of bonding the plastic molecules to make them much stronger. PEX has been used in the United States since 1980’s and in California since 2008, being approved in California statewide in 2009. PEX systems have been proven clean, healthy and safe.
We install Uponor PEX. With over 15 billion feet of PEX tubing in use around the planet, Uponor PEX is the most widely tested and used PEX in the world. Laboratory results indicate that PEX systems will last between 100 and 200 years.

PEX Advantages PEX saves money. It is less expensive than copper. PEX flexibility allows faster installation. PEX can be bent around corners, requiing fewer connections and fittings. PEX is slightly quieter than properly installed copper pipe. PEX tends to insulate, resisting heat gain or loss. PEX resists mineral build up. PEX pipes do not have a residual odor and taste for a week or so after installation. PEX resists freeze bursting because it is a flexible material. PEX is durable and resilient to aggressive water and soils, problems that can cause metal pipe to fail. PEX has been in use about 35 years. PEX manufacturer’s warranty is 25 years, but it is backed by our lifetime guarantee. |

Copper Advantages Copper is a metal that resists corrosion and has future value. It can be recycled, making it the environmental material of choice. Copper has a proven track record. It has been in use over 5000 years and has been soldered about 100 years. Copper inhibits algae and bacterial growth as well as mineral build up. Copper is ‘critter proof’, they can’t eat through it. Copper can be used outside and isn’t harmed by UV exposure. Copper resists burning and doesn’t release toxic gases when it does burn. Copper holds up better in a natural disaster. Copper manufacture’s warranty is 50 years, but it is backed by our lifetime guarantee. Copper should last as long as your home. Click here for a brief PEX video presentation or play video to right. |
